Florals with An Edge: Pinspiration and How to Wear Them

Summer is in full swing and with the newly-liberating hot weather, we are shedding our extra layers for shorts, skirts, breezy tops and flowy prints. One of my favorite current trends is florals done right. (By done right, I mean not that boring pastel-y, washed out-with-too-many-vines floral that is more often found on your grandmother’s couch than it is on a fierce outfit.) So how can you amp up your summer look with hip florals and avoid looking like you stepped out swathed in outdated drapes? Here’s my floral inspiration and some tips on picking the right pattern for your look.

1. Pick Bright Colors/ Bold Patterns

A way to avoid the dated floral look is to pick patterns with bold shapes, big dominant florals instead of dainty patterns. I also love the look of bright saturated colors, think pinks, purples, oranges and reds that make a statement instead of blending into the background. This skirt’s bold pink and orange are bright saturated colors and this pattern will add energy to your look. ($16)

2. Pick Modern Shapes

Avoid looking too demure with the addition of a floral print. Pick a slightly sexy shape and style to make the piece pop. Choose a shorter A-line skirt, sleeveless blouse or a piece that shows off a little skin. After all, we want to show off that summer tan as well! These high-waisted shorts will be sure to show off your fabulous legs and your summer glow. ($45)

3. Choose a Fun Accent

Part of the floral problem is often too much floral. (Think Kim Kardashian’s recent floral mishap) a floor-length gown with full sleeves and turtleneck just were too much pattern. You can easily include a cool pop of floral with an accent piece that gives you the feminine look, without having too much of a good thing. Try adding a cool floral shoe, bag or statement necklace as your floral centerpiece. These floral shoes from ShoeDazzle ($40) are a great, fun accent to add a pop to any outfit.

Pinspiration: Florals With An Edge

This look is one of my favorite floral looks, because not only does it have bright fun summer colors and is a little sexy, but it also has a little edge with the bold black accessories and heavy gold chain jewelry. There is a definite mix between sweet and sassy.

I composed this look with a great A-line floral skirt, full of color and brightness, with a little yellow to play up the summer blouse. Add a flowy sleeveless yellow blouse, with a slight V neckline to accentuate the cool gold collar necklace. Add the edge factor with black shoes and a bag. An overly-large foldover leather clutch and black shoes amp up the sophistication of this look and make it acceptable for evening as well. Add your statement gold accents that give this look a rocker edge: Chunky gold chain collar necklace, bracelets and statement gold ring. I also added a pair of pink studs for a little color and a great watch to keep it sleek. Polish off the look with a summery coral lip, bronzer and some mascara to keep it easy and fresh.
